Royal Mail wants dog attacks on postmen to end

The firm said there have been 37 attacks on postmen and women in the PO postcode area in the past year, with 2,470 across the UK.

Running until Saturday, July 8, the Dog Awareness Week campaign hopes to encourage responsible dog ownership in the Portsmouth region.

Royal Mail says that although most dogs are not necessarily dangerous, even the most placid animal can attack if they feel their territory is being threatened.

Figures show that last year, 71 per cent of dog attacks on postal workers have happened at the front door or in the front garden, with the number of attacks tallying up at 2,471.

Royal Mail operations director Geoff Braden says something has to change.

Mr Braden said: ‘Some of these attacks have led to extremely serious and life changing injuries and this is unacceptable.

‘Our postmen and women need to be able to deliver the service they provide to communities across the UK, without the risk of injury.’
