VETERAN former News photographer Michael Scaddan has passed away.

The 66-year-old had been battling a mystery illness for several weeks.

He was treated in the specialist neurological unit of Southampton General Hospital after falling ill in the new year.

Recently he was transferred to Queen Alexandra Hospital, Cosham, where he died peacefully yesterday.

Michael was born and bred in Portsmouth and was well known throughout the city.

He started working as a freelance photographer for The News in the 1980s and become a staff member in 1990.

But he continued to contribute photos following early retirement three years ago.

Michael lived in the family home in Crasswell Street, Landport.

He will be sadly missed by colleagues at The News.

A full tribute will appear tomorrow.
