VOLUNTEERS who help families are needed for a community initiative.

Home-Start Butser has been training volunteers to support families with children under five for the past 16 years.

They have a team of 60 volunteers supporting around 80 families a year.

Senior organiser Nicola Winter said: ‘Our volunteers can’t commit to helping for the rest of their lives, so we are always looking for volunteers.

‘And even if people don’t want to train as a home visiting volunteer, we can always do with help in the office, fundraising, on our management committee, supporting our family groups or helping out with trips or Christmas parties.

Susan, a volunteer for 12 years, said: ‘People laugh at me when I say that I get more from supporting families than they get from me. But it’s true. It can be really hard work. But it’s so rewarding.’

The next course to train volunteers is at Merchistoun Hall, Horndean, from Tuesday, October 7 to December 16 9.30am to 12.30pm. Call (01730) 233755.
