NURSING her head with a pack of ice, Penny Mordaunt reveals what happened after she tried a daring back dive in preparation for Splash!

The Portsmouth MP dislocated the thumb on her left hand and suffered bruising after doing a back dive straight for the first time off a 7.5m board.

She was left in pain after landing awkwardly in a pool at Southend-on-Sea, where she’s been practising ahead of her appearance in the ITV diving programme tomorrow.

Fortunately, Penny wasn’t seriously hurt – and she’s vowed to try the same dive again and put on a great show.

The only thing she won’t be doing is a dive from the 10m board, as she thinks that would be too risky.

Penny said: ‘I’m doing a difficult dive. It looks great off a 5m board but I wanted to go higher.

‘I attempted it on Wednesday, with disastrous consequences.

‘My left thumb was out of socket and my arms and legs were bruised.

‘I’m still going to do it on the show off the 7.5m board.

‘I just have to push through the pain.

‘I have done a front dive off a 10m board, but going backwards off a high board is very frightening indeed, so I’ll have to psych myself up to do it.

‘The landing might be particularly awful.

‘It’s taken me many hours to get to where I am now.’

As previously reported in The News, Penny is donating her £10,000 appearance fee to Hilsea Lido Pool for the People Trust, which owns Hilsea Lido.

Penny will be up against singer and musician Paul Young, model Danielle Lloyd, comedian Patrick Monahan and The Only Way Is Essex star Dan Osbourne.

Two of the five contestants will make it through to the semi-finals.

The show, held at an Olympic-sized pool at Inspire: Luton Sports Village, starts at 7pm.
