Spring into action with Portsdown U3A

In the photograph, our founding members John Gill and Diana Warren cut the first of our anniversary cakes.

The best part about this is that we have even more celebrations to come throughout the year – that means more parties and even more cake to share.

We cater for people who are no longer in full-time employment and, although we mostly cover the north of the city of Portsmouth, we are more than happy to welcome everyone who wants to join us.

Like all U3As, we are a learning organisation that runs on mutual support and fun!

Therefore, we actually have a wide range of Interest Groups that appeal to all tastes.

We also hold regular general meetings on the third Wednesday of each month (except August) at 2.00pm in Cosham Baptist Church, 48 Havant Road, Cosham, P06 2QZ.

We normally have a guest speaker, followed by a chance to meet some of our other members and share a cup of tea with one another

Visitors are welcome for £2 a time. Our yearly subscription is exceptionally good value for money at just £16.

On March 15 we had my own talk on the centenary of the Russian revolution, exactly 100 years to the day since the abdication of Tsar Nicholas.

On April 19 we have Kathy Mason speaking about hypnotherapy and counselling.

At Portsdown U3A, you will also find interesting projects and special events.

We have an ongoing Heritage Lottery-funded project, The Impact on the People of Portsmouth of the Battle of Jutland.

Currently, we are running free Battle of Jutland Exhibitions in Portsmouth and Gosport.

Our most recent was held on March 25 in collaboration with our colleagues at St Wilfrid’s Church, George Street, as they have their own 20 Streets Project of research on their First World War memorials.

A very interesting and successful day for all concerned.

Looking ahead, from May 8 until June 23, our exhibition will be in the History Centre at the Central Library in Guildhall Square.
