A SPONSORED walk across the South Downs will help people thousands of miles away.

Portsmouth Oxfam is hosting its annual South Downs Safari on Sunday, starting at Harting Down, near Petersfield at 10am.

The walk, which is in its 33rd year, will raise funds to support water and sanitation projects in Niger, one of the least developed and poorest countries in the world.

Dr Owen Plunkett is organising the walk.

He said: ‘It’s difficult to believe that conditions such as those in Niger can exist in this day and age.’

The seven-mile walk goes along the South Downs Way to Hooksway where there is a pub selling real ale and hot food.

Alternatively participants can take a picnic lunch.

Walkers can either collect sponsorship or make a donation.

Sponsorship forms and further information can be obtained by contacting Dr Plunkett on (023) 9225 4959 or by e-mailing
