The 72-year-old decided a table-top sale was the way to go and the event took place at Emsworth Community Centre.

More than 20 volunteers sold everything from cakes to clothes, books and bath bombs.

Mrs Stott said: ‘I just thought if it was us, how would we like to be treated? I couldn’t watch all those people suffering and not do anything and a lot of people I’ve spoken to feel the same way.’

Proceeds will be given to charities which support refugees including Save the Children, World Vision, the Red Cross and Care.

Items sold had been donated in an appeal.

As well as the sale, there were information boards set up so that visitors could learn more about the charities being supported.
