John Urmson, 37, was diagnosed with terminal cancer in November 2015 and is desperate to make one last memory with his soul mate, Lisa, before he becomes too ill.

A JustGiving campaign has been set up and has already drummed up more than £2,000 of the £3,500 target.

Father-of-five John, who served on the former Portsmouth aircraft carrier HMS Illustrious as a Naval Airman (Aircraft Handler), was overwhelmed by the generosity, and described his supporters as ‘angels’.

During his time on Illustrious, he helped with the rescue effort in the Philippines in the aftermath of the deadly Typhoon Haiyan.

Friend Katie McAdams, who set up the online appeal, described John as ‘an exceptional person who has always prided himself on helping other’.
