AFTER a year of trying, a small independent bookshop has secured a visit by television gardening expert Alan Titchmarsh.
The gardener, novelist and presenter – known as the thinking woman’s crumpet – will make an appearance in December while on a promotional tour for his new book, The Complete Countryman: A User’s Guide to Traditional Skills and Lost Crafts.
It is a coup for Hayling Island Bookshop, based in Mengham.
Owner Marie Telford said: ‘I am absolutely thrilled that Alan is coming to Hayling to talk about his new book.
‘After the talk audience members will be able to buy his books then meet Alan to have them signed which I know will be very popular part of the evening – I’m going to be first in the queue.’
Alan’s TV career includes a host of much loved programmes from Pebble Mill to Gardeners World then Ground Force, and Songs of Praise.
He currently has his own chat show on ITV and a long running radio show on BBC Radio 2 and he has written and published nearly 50 gardening books, autobiographies and novels.
In his latest book he explores the heritage of rural Britain, its landscapes and wildlife, its traditions, customs and crafts.
Alan will be at The Community Centre, Hayling Park on December 7 at 7pm.
Tickets cost £5 and are redeemable against the cost of the book.
They expected to sell out quickly. Buy tickets by calling Hayling Island Bookshop on (023) 9246 6620.
