More support for parents and teachers to cope with unruly children was promised by education chiefs to try to stem the rising tide of expulsions.

Hampshire County Council wanted to develop a network of support for children, their families and schools as expulsions soared.

A six-day course would be held for 80 teachers to help them cope with disruptive children '“ part of a strategy to keep children in school.

Officers wanted to work more closely with social services and other agencies to provide back-up for parents, including help in parenting skills.

The moves followed a series of initiatives already being piloted in Hampshire schools and pupil-referral units, including a mentoring system which linked excluded children with local businesses.

At Paulsgrove, a project was set up to provide support and advice for parents in an attempt to tackle problems early on.

Education workers recognised they needed parents' support to stop pupils disrupting school life '“ but parents needed their support to help bring their children under control.
