‘The occupants of the car had left by the time officers had arrived. Following a pursuit on foot, one of the occupants, a woman in her 40s from Fareham, was located nearby. She had minor injuries but was not seriously hurt,’ a police spokeswoman said.

‘Officers are investigating to establish the exact circumstances of the incident.’

The small number of passengers on the bus only reported minor injuries.

Eyewitness Phil Marlow, 33, was eating his dinner when he heard ‘an almighty bang’ outside of his Station Road house.

Phil said: ‘I ran outside and it looked like a car had come round the corner and crashed into the front of a bus. Three people got out of the car and began to run off. There was an off-duty police officer who managed to grab one of the people running away.

‘An ambulance was soon on the scene but the bus driver appeared to be really shaken up.’
