CONSTRUCTION of a new crematorium on the outskirts of Havant has begun.

The Southern Co-operative is building the multi-million pound facility, called The Oaks, near woodland off Bartons Road.

The final development will include a tranquil memorial garden, wildflower meadow and wildlife pond.

Steve Pearce, chief operating officer for end of life services at The Southern Co-operative, said: ‘The design of our new crematorium embraces cutting-edge technology and consideration for the natural environment. High quality care of the deceased and their mourners is paramount and we believe that the new crematorium will greatly improve the experience for local families dealing with bereavement.’

The builders are the Romsey branch of Midas Construction.

The crematorium is set to open in autumn next year.
