David Hart at the Great Run Company said: ‘The Morrisons Great South Run is a famously flat course so it is ideal for people who have perhaps left it a bit later than others to sign up.

‘The course is filled with iconic landmarks, bands on the run, boost zones and thousands of spectators cheering you on.’

Top tips from Great Run Training include:

n Set realistic expectations based on your current fitness level. Don’t push yourself too hard, relax and, most importantly, enjoy going at a pace that feels comfortable.

n Build up training gradually – allow your body to become used to increasing levels of activity.

n Stay within your comfort zone – it’s better to complete the 10 miles at a reasonable pace than it is to go flat out and fail. Many enjoy running and walking the event.

n If you would like to support a good cause, get friends and family to sponsor you – it can help provide a little extra motivation.

n If 10 miles is too daunting, don’t forget there’s the Morrisons Great South Run 5k on Saturday, October 24.
