PEOPLE are being invited to decide which voluntary groups in their area are given a cash grant.

Havant Borough Council is running an initiative called Approved By You, where people can choose groups to receive grants up to £1,000.

Organisations make a bid for the cash before residents hear about their proposals and vote for the ones they think deserve the money.

Nicki Conyard, the community team leader at Havant Borough Council, said: ‘The aim is to attract those groups who may not usually apply for funding by offering a very easy application process and to put the decision-making in the hands of local people.’

There is £30,150 up for grabs in total, £17,500 of which was provided by Hampshire County Council.

The other £12,650 was contributed by Havant’s council.

Voting events will take place in Emsworth at the Emsworth Centre on November 22 from 6pm until 8pm.

People in Waterlooville can vote at Waterlooville Community Centre on November 26 from 6pm until 8pm.

Those in Hayling Island can hear about the projects and vote at the South Hayling United Reformed Church on November 29 from 6pm until 8pm.

And people in Bedhampton and Leigh Park can go to Barncroft School on December 5 from 4pm until 6pm.

Anyone who would like to take part should call (023) 9241 5556 or email

The application process for organisations wanting to bid for a grant opens on Tuesday and closes on November 9.
