TALENTED young film makers are finalists in a national competition, after portraying the life of a deaf Gosport school pupil.
The 12-strong group of 13 to 25-year-olds, led by Sam Williams, 25, of Kennedy Crescent, Alverstoke, made the five-minute film about deaf year 9 Brune Park School pupil, Imogen Cottle, 13.
Imogen has been deaf since she was three years old but has not let that hold her back, with the film’s title, No Limits, representing her take on life.
Imogen, who wears two hearing aids, said: ‘I’m deaf and have been since I was three years old but I got used to it.
‘It doesn’t hold me back, it helps me, all my friends get used to it. In the film I was acting for a bit and dancing and singing – I’m really good at drama.
‘It makes me feel like I’m just like everyone else. The film shows my disability, that I’m me.’
No Limits was shot at Brune Park School, in Military Road, Goosport, with the team working hard on the film.
They spent hours producing it from their homes and meeting in coffee shops.
The film will be showcased this Saturday along with other entries to the national uScreen competition at Pinewood Studios, Buckinghamshire.
The uScreen charity, which aims to give deaf young people a chance in film, awarded director Samantha a £1,500 bursary to create the film, along with a mentor, David White.
Sam, who became involved in the project when she was a media technician at Brune Park, is confident of their chances at the red carpet awards ceremony.
She said: ‘I think we’ve got a high chance but I don’t know the other groups, I haven’t seen the other films.
‘I think we’ve done a good job as a team; they don’t get paid for it at all.
‘We’ve really enjoyed it and if it can help with education then it’s good.’
And Sam hopes to continue to work with young people in Gosport to make films.
‘We’re hoping to become professional at it, I want to see how many people want to get involved.
‘Everyone in Gosport is media-oriented but they don’t get a chance to do it.
‘I plan to help youths try out what they want to do.’
