Personal service outside a Southsea greengrocer's

There's some old-fashioned personal service going on outside a Portsmouth greengrocer's in this picture.

Joan Farmer (née Tiddiman) took it in either 1947 or 1948.

At the time she was working in this corner shop in Winter Road, Southsea (although Joan refers to it as Milton).

It was owned by Harry Tutton and his son John.

She recalls: ‘Next to the greengrocer’s was the music shop and after that came the hardware shop (Moores ), and as I remember, the fresh fish shop where my sister Mrs Turner worked, which was also owned by the Moores.’

She concludes her e-mail saying: ‘Perhaps some of the young people in the photo might recognise themselves?’

Joan, who is 89 and lives at Newbury, says the Tiddimans were a Portsmouth family ‘but mum’s family moved away in 1951 when my father was relocated to Aldershot with his company, Timothy White’s’.
