A PETITION protesting against plans to build a new 7,000-home eco-town north of Fareham has been handed in to a council.
More than 1,400 people have signed it, under the banner Stop Fareham New Town. They are calling on Fareham Borough Council to reject the plans.
Lib Dem councillors Paul Whittle and Nick Gregory have submitted the petition on their behalf, and are calling for better public consultation on the plans.
Cllr Whittle said: ‘As ward councillors for the council, our first duty is to listen, support and represent the residents and campaign groups within borough council.
‘I’m very concerned that there has been insufficient public consultation about the massive housing project planned.
‘When the ideas have been published they have been wrapped up in local authority jargon and complicated technical language.’
In December, an online survey to find the public’s views on how the borough should develop in the future was withdrawn amid fears it had been hijacked by campaigners.
Cllr Whittle claimed it was scrapped because the council had not liked the answers it was getting and added: ‘We encourage everyone to make sure they have their say by filling in the online forms, writing to the council or contacting the councillors.’
