Piper Irene completes 50,000-mile journey across the globe for Portsmouth charity

A LONE piper completed an epic 50,000-mile voyage across the world to perform at venues across seven continents for a military charity in Portsmouth.

Irene Robinson, 57, finished her 50-day adventure, playing the bagpipes at the world’s most iconic locations all for the Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity and children’s hospice Julia’s House, in Wiltshire.

Irene, of Poole, began her journey from HMS Victory in Portsmouth on January 10.

Since then, she has travelled to the US, Brazil, New Zealand, Australia, Japan, Hong Kong, South Africa Russia and even Antarctica before completing her final leg in London on Saturday.

Irene said the journey had been ‘out of this world’.

‘I feel humbled by the love and understanding that I have been shown along the way. In a nutshell, I don’t think my journey is coming to an end but just beginning,’ she said

Speaking of the RNRMC the forensic nurse said: ‘The Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity make every mile count to support serving and former members and their families. I am proud to be a member of The Royal Navy Pipe Band Association and because of this, I see at first-hand the brilliant work that they do.’

Rebecca Saunders, regional fundraiser at RNRMC added the charity was ‘thrilled’ by Irene’s ‘brilliantly ambitious’ fundraising efforts.
