THERE is still time to sign up for the first-ever 5k Great South Run.
The shorter distance run has been put on to provide an opportunity to anyone intimidated by the distance of Sunday’s main race, but who still wants to be part of a world-class running event.
The new race will take in much of the flat, scenic course of the Great South Run but offers a more manageable distance for those new to running or getting back into training after some time off.
David Hart, communications director of Nova, said: ‘Having reached capacity for the Bupa Great South Run five months ahead of the event, we want to offer the opportunity for more people to get involved in what is a fantastic weekend of running.
‘The 5k distance, on a very flat course around Southsea, will be a perfect first step for runners, who will hopefully use it to progress to the 10-mile distance in the future.’
All entrants will also receive a guaranteed opportunity to take part in the 2012 Bupa Great South Run.
It will take place on Saturday, October 29 at 10am along Southsea seafront and is open to anyone over 14 years old.
Also taking place that day are the Mini and Junior Great South Runs from midday. Visit greatrun.org for details.
