Today, around 30 police officers were at Guildhall Square to keep the two groups apart.

Around eight members of the far-right movement the Pie and Mash Squad, dressed in masks, lined the square shouting while people supporting the Portsmouth Anti-Fascists made chants from the Guildhall steps.

The protest lasted around 30 minutes.

One of the anti-racism supporters said: ‘We held the protest to make a stand against racism.

‘It is quite well-known there has been an increase in racism and we want to make a public showing against that.’

The protest comes as Stand Up To Racism held a conference in London today.
