IF RUNNING 10 miles was not tough enough, nine police officers will be completing the feat in full riot gear.

The team from Hampshire police will be taking on the Great South Run in Southsea wearing 30kg of kit each.

They are running the race to raise money for The Gurney Fund, a charity that helps bereaved children from police forces.

Sergeant Spencer Wragg, Sgt Paul Bromell, Sgt Justin Noons, Sgt Charles Ilderton, PC Jermaine Miller, PC Eric Wong, PC Mark Kingston, PC Paul Scott and PC Dan Turner, will take on the Great South Run in less than three weeks.

PC Miller has previously taken on the race, sponsored by Simplyhealth, and suggested that it would be a good challenge for the group to try to make it more difficult.

The officers are putting in the training at the force headquarters in Netley before and after work.

Sgt Wragg, from the public order team, said: ‘We are all police officers who work for Hampshire Constabulary in differing roles across the force.

‘We are all running in our own time and have taken the day off work to complete it.

‘Some of us have taken part in the Great South Run before and one of our colleagues, Jermaine, suggested that it would be a challenge to try to complete the course in our full public order kit.

‘With a flat course this seemed an ideal opportunity to take on such a challenge and if we were going to do it, we decided to support a charity at the same time.

‘We’re all now thinking we aren’t sure if it was a good idea now training has started.’

The kit the officers are wearing is used to protect them in public disorder incidents, including riots.

It includes a helmet, a protective vest, police boots and a riot shield.

Sgt Wragg added: ‘We will be carrying shields the entire way and in all, the kit weights around 30kg.’

More than 20,000 people are expected to run in the Great South Run, on October 22.
