McCarthy & Stone wants to do the work at the back of people’s homes in Alhambra Road, Southsea, as part of work to build retirement flats it has permission to build.

The project has faced controversy as residents are furious workers demolished a wall previously in place without asking their permission.

And McCarthy & Stone was criticised after workers got into the back of their gardens and blocked off access and put up temporary blue fences.

Though the company has defended its actions, saying fencing was put up to protect the safety of residents.

McCarthy & Stone needs planning permission to build the new wall at the back of Alhambra Road, and a decision will be made by members of Portsmouth City Council’s planning committee on Wednesday.

Approval will allow the company to press ahead with its wider development; the construction of 31 retirement flats, with 66 ‘extra care’ apartments, including a ground floor shop. The company won an appeal lodged with the UK’s planning inspectorate to pursue the scheme.

Portsmouth City Council’s planning committee had previously rejected the plans, saying the design was not in keeping with the area.

The planning meeting takes place on the second floor of Portsmouth’s civic offices from 1pm.
