Rees-Mogg on 2019 confidence vote
Jacob Rees-Mogg has said he was “mistaken” to suggest that former prime minister Theresa May had lost the confidence of too many Tories in 2019.
When asked what victory would look like for Boris Johnson, Cabinet Office minister Mr Rees-Mogg said: “One is enough.”
Asked about remarks he made about Mrs May’s confidence vote in 2019, he added: “When I said that, everybody said to me I was wrong.
“I was wrong on two grounds. One is that democracy requires that one is enough, and the other is that it was ungenerous.
“Somebody has won and I accepted that, that I think that I was mistaken in saying that there were secret, hidden rules.
“I don’t think there are, but of course then Theresa May then lost parliamentary votes and that was what led to her going rather than the vote of confidence.”
What happens if PM loses the vote?
If Boris Johnson was to lose the vote of confidence, an unlikely outcome it seems, here’s what would happen.
There will be a leadership contest in the Conservative party to decide the next leader - and therefore the next Prime Minister.
The campaign would take around six weeks and only Conservative members would be able to vote
Long queue forms as MPs vote this evening

Father of the House Sir Peter Bottomley was the first Conservative MP to vote.
Other early voters included Foreign Secretary Liz Truss and Home Office minister Kit Malthouse.
Results not expected until around 9pm

Portsmouth residents call on MPs to 'get a grip'
Residents of Portsmouth have had their say on the no-confidence vote facing the prime minister – with a recurring message that people are left jaded by the political climate and do not feel represented.
Conservative MPs are set to cast their votes in a secret ballot that will signal how much support the prime minister Boris Johnson has within his own party.
