Brexit: Hayling farmer welcomes decision to leave the EU

Sam Wilson, 30, from Stoke Fruit Farm in Havant Road, Hayling Island, said: ‘It’s good news.

‘It’s good we are out.

‘Farmers in the long-run will be better off.

‘The subsidies we get are tainted with a lot of bureaucracy.

‘From my own point of view, we get a subsidy which is quite substantial but it’s not paid to farmers.

‘It’s paid to landowners.’

He added: ‘Farmers will be better off in the long-run. You can’t run a subsidised business.’

Mr Wilson said a lot of his farming colleagues locally felt the same way.

‘I have lots of farming colleagues who voted out even though for some of them over 50 per cent of their profit is from subsidies,’ he said.

He said leaving the EU was not ‘necessarily a benefit’, adding: ‘It’s more that people are just fed up of being dictated to by something they have not voted for.’
