Brexit Live: Portsmouth North MP Penny Mordaunt backed for Prime Minister by Jacob Rees-MoggÂ

Penny Mordaunt has been backed as a contender to take over as Prime Minister by a leading Brexiteer.Â

Jacob Rees-Mogg gave a press conference this afternoon after announcing his intentions to submit a letter of no-confidence in the Prime Minister. 

Speaking outside Parliament Mr Rees-Mogg backed Ms Mordaunt as one of his preferred candidates to replace Theresa May as Prime Minister.

The submission of the no-confidence letter comes on the back of six minister resigning from cabinet positions over Mrs May's EU withdrawal deal.

Brexit Secretary Dominic Raab resigned this morning and so did Fareham MP Suella Braverman. 

Mr Rees-Mogg named Ms Mordaunt alongside Boris Johnson, David Davis and Esther McVey as potential replacement Conservative party leader and new Prime Minister '“ notably Ms Mordaunt is the only one mentioned not to have resigned from a cabinet position under Theresa May yet. 

On social media Ms Mordaunt has also been backed to run for Prime Minister.
