The Armed Forces minister said: ‘I am very proud of everyone who took part in this historic referendum.

‘We have now been given a very clear mandate to leave the EU. In doing so we must provide reassurance to both our European partners but also to the many people who voted to remain in the EU.

‘Democracy and freedom are never a bad thing, and we must now work to secure all those opportunities – for our security, prosperity and our influence – that Brexit provides.’

She added: ‘I am very sad that the Prime Minister has decided to stand down.

‘I had hoped he would stay, but fully understand why he feels he can’t.

‘Under his leadership we have been able to do much for our city, in particular massively reducing unemployment, and much for society; I was pleased he mentioned equal marriage in his speech. And of course he gave us this referendum.

‘I think we will look back on this time with pride – the country has been hugely engaged with these issues, and as has often been said , this has the potential to really invigorate politics for the better. I hope it does.

‘We now need a calm and cool head to see us through the coming weeks. We are opening up massive opportunities for our nation, and we must all work together now to seize them.’
