But John Perry, chairman of Ukip in Havant, warned that one of the big tasks now was to unite as a country because the referendum had been so close and many younger people voted to remain.

He told The News: ‘I’m really excited for the future.

‘We have a fantastic opportunity for Britain with leaving the EU and I really believe that.

‘I think there are two main challenges now.

‘First of all, although the majority by which the leave campaign won is good, it was not an overwhelming majority.

‘Somehow we need to unite the country.

‘I believe the decision of the people is the right one.

‘The other challenge is younger people – referring to those under 25 – I believe the majority of young people actually wanted to remain.

‘Somehow we have to get across to the younger people that leaving is a good option.’

And he added: ‘I believe we will be a success on our own two feet.

‘Yes, there will be turmoil on the stock market, there will be turmoil on the foreign exchanges.

‘Once that settled down I believe we have a very bright future for Britain.’
