MADAM Butterfly will be broadcast free at Guildhall Square.

On Monday the opera will be beamed live to the city centre’s big screen from London’s Royal Opera House.

The event will start at 7pm, with a ‘hum along’ led from Trafalgar Square, and the show will start at 7.30pm.

This production of Puccini’s story of a Japanese geisha’s love for an American naval officer will be conducted by Andris Nelsons, and star James Valenti as Pinkerton and Patricia Racette as Cio-Cio-San.

Craig Willcock, Portsmouth City Council cultural development officer, said: ‘Whether you’re already a fan or open to a new cultural experience, pack a picnic, blanket, chair, cushions and warm clothes, and enjoy an evening of opera.’
