Call for more funds for brain tumour research

AN MP has praised the University of Portsmouth for its brain tumour research, but urged the government to do more to fund the work.

Portsmouth South MP Flick Drummond met with Professor Geoff Pilkington, who directs the Brain Tumour Research Centre of Excellence at the University, at a Westminster reception last week to mark Brain Tumour Awareness Month.

Brain tumours kill more children and adults under the age of 40 than any other cancer, yet just one per cent of the national spend on cancer research has been allocated to the disease.

Flick said: ‘We can be proud that Portsmouth University is at the forefront of research.

‘But it’s clear brain tumour research is at the back of the queue when it comes to funding and I urge the government and charities to look at ensuring more funds are available.’
