On June 23, the British public went to the polls to vote on our continued membership of the European Union.

By 17,410,742 votes to 16,141,241, they decided that Britain should leave.

Here in the Solent, the proportion of those who voted to leave the EU was higher – 58 per cent in Portsmouth and 63 per cent in Gosport voted out.

The political repercussions have thus far been staggering.

A successful Prime Minister who won a record election victory only 12 months ago has resigned.

Labour MPs have backed a vote of no confidence in their leader, the Scottish First Minister is considering a second independence referendum and the First Minister of Northern Ireland has called for reunification.

However, the British people have spoken and it is right that this proudly democratic nation accepts and respects the will of the majority.

We must reunite around a leader who will secure the best possible future for our country, defeat the current uncertainty that reigns and negotiate a path forward that truly works for Great Britain.

The candidates to be the next leader of the Conservative Party and the next Prime Minister of Great Britain have now put themselves forward and I firmly believe that Theresa May is the best person for this job.

Her aptitude, strength and unrivalled experience are essential for effectively negotiating our exit from the European Union and getting the best possible terms for Britain.

Her political service to date shows that she puts the nation’s interest firmly ahead of her own. We need to stabilise our economy to protect jobs and livelihoods.

I believe that Theresa May alone can unite our nation, stabilise our economy and lead us all through this deeply uncertain time.
