GRANTS of up to £1,000 are up for grabs for voluntary groups across East Hampshire.

And, in an interesting twist, local people will vote to decide who gets the cash.

The Approved By You initiative is being launched by East Hampshire District Council and Community First Havant and East Hampshire.

The scheme has already been a success in the Havant area.

Grants of between £250 and £1,000 are on offer from a kitty of £17,500.

Community team leader at East Hampshire District Council Mike O’Mahony said: ‘The aim is to attract those groups who may not usually apply for funding by offering a very easy application process and to put the decision making into the hands of local people.’

Applications should be submitted by Friday, February 22.

Forms and help with applications will be available.

An advice session takes place next Tuesday at Penns Place, Petersfield, from 1.30pm to 3.30pm, then on January 29 at the same times at Merchistoun Hall, Horndean, and finally from 6.30pm to 8.30pm at Penns Place on January 30.

Voting events will take place in March.
