Portsmouth City Council has given local charities and sports clubs the chance to make money from the game after linking up with lottery firm Gatherwell.

For every £1 ticket sold for the weekly draw, 60p will go to causes that need the cash most. The council says around £1,000 is expected to be distributed every week on the back of the draw, which takes place on Saturday, November 5.

And it is estimated that more than £50,000 in total will be made for groups over the next year.

The figures are based on the fact 776 people have bought multiple tickets – not just for the first draw but in advance for those happening in future months.

Councillor Donna Jones, Tory leader of Portsmouth City Council, said: ‘I’m delighted the lottery ticket sales have exceeded our expectations.

‘The fact we are raising more than £1,000 for local causes ensures we can do exactly what we wanted, and that’s to put the profits back into the community to help local people, particularly disadvantaged children and disabled and vulnerable people.

‘We hope it goes from strength to strength.’

The lottery gives local residents the chance to win a £25,000 jackpot.

Tickets went on sale last month and are available at

Each ticket will consist of six numbers.

There will be a draw every Saturday night when a six-digit winning combination will be picked.

Prizes are three free tickets for two numbers, £25 for three, £250 for four and £2,000 for five. Match all six and you get the jackpot.

The outcome of the draw will be revealed on the website.
