HMS Collingwood's physical training instructors (PTIs) visited pupils studying the college's extended diploma in uniformed public services, giving them a taste of life in the armed forces and emergency services.

The youngsters took on the navy's swim test, followed by press-ups and sit-ups, with a 1.5 mile run around the base to finish off.

Student Ben Hall said: '˜I'd like to be a Royal Navy mechanic, like my grandfather.

'˜This gives you an idea of what to expect when you join up.'

Fellow student Louanne Sprigg added: '˜I want to join the Royal Navy too and this means you get to experience a bit of what navy life will be like.'

Danny Thomas, who accompanied the group, said: '˜Some of the group are returning to HMS Collingwood after competing in the Junior Leaders' Field Gun Competition at the beginning of July.

Fareham College has really good links with HMS Collingwood.'
