RESIDENTS will be able to have their say on plans for a new £7m swimming pool.

The swimming pool and leisure centre is earmarked for the old Coldeast Hospital site, in Sarisbury Green, and will go out to public consultation next week.

The 25m six-lane swimming pool will be the only public pool in the Western Wards of Fareham and has been in the pipeline since 2000.

Sean Woodward, leader of the council and ward councillor for Sarisbury, said: ‘Residents are delighted. It is something that has been asked about many times.

‘Everybody is absolutely thrilled that it is finally going to be delivered.’

The preferred site was at the Locks Heath Shopping Village but due to complications with land ownership, the deal did not go through and an alternative site was found on the former site of the Coldeast Hospital, which also has plans for 400 houses.

The nearest swimming pool for people in the Western Wards of Fareham is Fareham Leisure Centre, in Park Lane.

Cllr Woodward said: ‘There is a huge demand for pool space. Fareham Leisure Centre is at capacity and sometimes it can be difficult to just turn up and swim as it is often booked out.

‘We are really keen to get this extra pool so we can provide the leisure facilities to the rest of the borough.’

Warsash ward councillor Michael Ford said residents were delighted.

Cllr Ford said: ‘There has been talk of another swimming pool for nearly 20 years and the population has grown dramatically since then.

‘The leisure centre is a hugely popular but it is at its limit. The council has done a lot of positive work to open this swimming pool on our doorstep and the reaction from residents has been extremely positive.’

Two consultations will be held next week so people can view the plans and make suggestions.

They will be held:

n Tuesday, October 28, from 1pm until 8.30pm, at Victory Hall, Warsash Road

n Thursday, October 30, from 1pm until 8.30pm, at Brookfield Community School, Brook Lane

Residents will also be able to get information at the next Community Action Team meeting, on Friday, November 7 at 7pm at Sarisbury Green Community Centre.

The council hopes to open the swimming pool in May 2016.
