Contentious proposal put on hold by councillors

Parliament visit for WI

PEOPLE fighting to save a green space from development will have to wait for a verdict on the site.

Councillors on Chichester District Council’s planning committee voted to defer plans to build 16 new homes on land north of Long Copse Lane, Westbourne, near Emsworth.

The committee said a site visit should be organised.

The proposals have courted controversy as previous plans to build 22 homes on the same land were thrown out after a three-day inquiry last year.

At the time, the government’s planning inspector said the proposal would result in ‘considerable harm to the character and appearance of the village’

Councillor Andrew Smith, chairman of the committee, said: ‘The locals made an articulate presentation and the committee was simply not sure – particularly in view of the fact that it had been before an inspector at the same location – and wanted to really have a look at the lie of the land.’

More than 60 residents have objected to the plans, as well as Westbourne Parish Council.
