Council awards cash boost to Hampshire arts groups

Gosport MP welcomes plans on homelessness but admits ‘it’s a significant problem’

ARTS and community groups have been given thousands of pounds in cash by Hampshire County Council.

Several groups in Gosport, Fareham and Petersfield have been given grants to help run their activities.

The councillor in charge of culture at the council, Cllr Keith Chapman, chose the groups at a meeting yesterday.

Gosport Voluntary Action was given £1,000 for a music-themed community exchange programme.

The St Francis School, in Fareham, was given £1,500 for extracurricular music workshops involving a number of other schools.

The council awarded £850 towards the Petersfield Music Festival.

Cllr Chapman also gave £3,000 towards Petersfield’s Phoenix Theatre and Art Centre to help run a celebrations of the arts with exhibitions, classes and events.

Cllr Chapman said: ‘Hampshire County Council is pleased to be supporting creativity and artistic activity throughout the county.

‘These grants contribute to running events and activities that contribute cultural benefits to local communities as well as increasing tourism within Hampshire.’

In total, 25 arts and community activities throughout Hampshire were awarded a slice of £26,775.
