Now the residents of Gosport are being asked how they would like to see a series of military buildings protected.

Gosport Borough Council has launched a consultation on plans to make the 19th century Haslar Barracks, near the former Haslar hospital, into a conservation area.

The authority hopes that by doing this it will tighten up planning rules and ensure that any future development preserves the site’s military character.

Council chiefs say the consultation document – known as the Haslar Barracks Conservation Area Appraisal – will then be used by planners to protect the Napoleonic-era site.

Rob Harper, the council’s head of conservation and design, said a regulatory board will be asked to approve the move on December 5.

But he said: ‘To back up the conservation area and to make sure we have a strong, detailed case for protecting the site, we’re drawing up this planning document. It will really help if local people help us to do this, and have their say on the future of this unique part of local and national history.’
