Councillor issues warning to fly-tippers after man jailed

A COUNCILLOR has issued a warning to potential fly-tippers after a man was jailed for offences across the county.

Ashley Mooney, 27, was prosecuted by councils in Portsmouth, Fareham, Gosport and Winchester for the offences, which cost £8,916 for local authorities to clear.

He was sentenced to 12 months behind bars by Portsmouth Crown Court on Wednesday.

His offences in the Winchester district included dumping rubbish in Wickham, Southwick, Bishop’s Waltham and Hambledon between April and June 2016.

Mooney of Queens Drive, Liverpool but formerly of Gosport, admitted to a total of 19 charges in regards to waste.

Councillor Lisa Griffiths, Winchester city councillor for health said: ‘This is another fly-tipping prosecution case which shows we mean business here in Winchester.

‘I am pleased that the court recognised the seriousness of this case and hope the outcome sends a clear message to others who think they can flout the law. We will not tolerate fly-tipping.’
