THE husband of a councillor hanged himself after she told him she was leaving him.

Julia Marshall, the Horndean councillor for East Hampshire District Council, had decided to leave Ivan Marshall after having put up with years of domestic abuse at his hands, an inquest has heard.

PC Megan Edwards told the inquest how Mrs Marshall said ‘goodbye’ to her husband, who was watching TV, and went to bed at around 10pm on June 16 last year, planning to move out the next day.

But when she woke later with a headache and went to get some medicine she became suspicious that Mr Marshall could not be found anywhere in the home in Redwing Road, Clanfield.

She saw him hanged in the garage through a window and called the police at 12.52am.

The garage door had been locked from the inside and police had to force their way in.

Portsmouth Coroner David Horsley recorded a verdict that Mr Marshall took his own life.
