PLANS for a new Tesco store in Lee-on-the-Solent will be decided at a meeting next month.

The company put in an application to Gosport Borough Council for a Tesco Express store on the corner of Pier Street and Marine Parade East.

But the plans have been met with anger from residents and business owners who have protested against having the store in the seaside town.

Peter Patterson, who owns the greengrocers in the High Street, said: ‘There is very much a community group objecting to the proposal.

‘The protest that we have held has been very peaceful and controlled. It’s not been out of hand.

‘It’s just a small community making their feelings known.

‘There are a lot of people looking to see which way it will go but there is really only one way it can proceed.’

Members of Lee Business Association and the Residents Association will speak at the meeting.

‘There is nothing right about this,’ added Mr Patterson.

‘It’s in a conservation area, it’s something that we treasure very much.

‘It’s a very sad situation. I’m very disappointed that it has come to this. It shouldn’t have happened in the first place.’

The meeting will take place at Gosport town hall on Tuesday, November 22.
