DAVID Cameron mocked the lack of Labour MPs representing the south of England during a debate in the House of Commons today.

The Tory prime minister said Dr Alan Whitehead, Labour parliamentary representative for Southampton Test, was something of a ‘rare bird’ after the MP put him on the spot about the government’s commitment to energy efficiency programmes.

It comes after the Conservatives stormed to victory across the south coast in the general election, picking up seats in Portsmouth South and Eastleigh and gaining larger majorities in areas such as Portsmouth North, Gosport, Fareham and Havant.

Mr Cameron told Dr Whitehead: ‘I hope it won’t be seen as gloating to welcome him back, because it’s quite a rare bird which is a Labour MP in the south of England.’
