THE deadline for registering as a voter in the local elections is approaching.

People can only vote if they are on the register and the final date for getting on in time to take part in the elections is Wednesday, April 18.

The deadline for applications for postal votes is 5pm on the same day.

The elections for councils in Portsmouth, Fareham, Gosport, Havant and Winchester will be held on Thursday May 3, and in Portsmouth a third of the council’s seats, one in each of the city’s 14 wards, will be contested.

David Williams, chief executive of Portsmouth City Council, said: ‘Voting is a massively important way for people to have their say on issues that matter to them and we want to see as many people as possible voting in the local elections.’
