Dozens turn out for anti-Trump rally in Portsmouth

Organisers estimated more than 70 people attended the rally in Guildhall Square, Portsmouth, last night.

The event was held together with the One Day Without Us campaign, which saw protesters gather across the country to celebrate migrant workers and the roles they play in society.

Jon Woods, chairman of the city’s Trade Union Congress, said: ‘More than 70 people came to Portsmouth’s Guildhall Square to show their opposition to Donald Trump being given a red carpet state welcome to the UK.

‘Stand Up to Racism called the event as part of nationwide protests on the day parliament debated the huge online petition against Trump’s state visit.

‘The protest also supported the One Day Without Us initiative to celebrate the contribution of migrant workers.’

He said speakers from Ireland and Germany told how migrant workers were essential for public services to function in the country.

Mr Woods said the Unison trade union is also supporting a national anti-racism demonstration in London on Saturday, March 18 by putting on a coach.

He said: ‘This is part of an international day of protest called by the United Nation on the anniversary of the 1960 Sharpeville massacre when 60 unarmed protestors were shot dead in South Africa.’
