Engineering subjects encouraged by parents

PARENTS are encouraging a career in engineering-based subjects.

Combined efforts by teachers, industry, engineering organisations and the government to change the perception of science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM), are starting to bear fruit as 51 per cent of parents surveyed by YouGov said they would encourage their child to pursue a STEM-based career.

The results of the research was released as BAE Systems, the Royal Air Force and Royal Navy joined forces again to launch a nationwide schools engineering and science roadshow, which aims to help tackle the UK’s shortage of scientists and engineers through an exciting theatre show and workshop.

Commodore Andy M Cree, from Royal Navy, said: ‘The navy is proud to support this roadshow as it is about inspiring the engineers and scientists of tomorrow. It enables us to highlight the variety of exciting roles and opportunities available, not just within the navy, but across the whole engineering and scientific community.’
