Extra signs go up at controversial QA Hospital bus lane

EXTRA signs warning drivers at a controversial bus lane have gone up after it netted £210,900 in fines.

The bus lane, near to Queen Alexandra Hospital in Cosham, saw 3,500 penalty notices issued to drivers in the last five months.

People are issued with a £60 fine, which is reduced to £30 if paid promptly.

Portsmouth City Council has now put up extra signs after scores of angry drover complained that the lane was not clear to make out and that it was difficult to distinguish when approaching it from the left or right.

Councillor Jim Fleming, cabinet member for traffic and transportation at Portsmouth City Council, said: ‘Whilst the signage that was in place at Cavell Drive complied with all of the necessary legal requirements, we listened to resident feedback and have made some updates, which we hope will address the confusion that some people experienced.

‘There is now increased signage to give people advance warning of the restriction, which was installed on February 21.’

The same lane also came under fire in November last year when the BBC reported the council had generated £123,000 from 2,062 penalty tickets issued since the camera was set up on July 22.
