AN MP has joined calls for an increase in local powers under a new law.
Fareham MP Suella Fernandes added her support to a bid for a ‘Southern Powerhouse’ under new government proposals for devolution of powers to communities.
She voted in favour of the Cities and Local Government Devolution Bill in Parliament, which would see powers devolved to ‘combined authorities’.
Authorities in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight have submitted a bid to the government for a devolution deal which would give new powers to a combined authority of 15 local authorities and two Local Enterprise Partnerships.
Miss Fernandes said: ‘Power should be moved closer to the people, and alongside these devolution measures, local government itself should devolve more powers to communities.’
