In her speech, Suella presented an overview of the debate surrounding the forthcoming referendum, setting out the suggested benefits and drawbacks of each option and considering how they might affect factors such as the UK’s economy, trade, jobs and education.

Speaking afterwards, Ms Fernandes said: ‘The referendum, needless to say, is the most important decision that all generations will have.

‘I see it as ‘a once in a lifetime’ decision and I have spent a lot of time thinking about both sides of the argument, because it will define Britain’s place in the world for future generations.

‘I have come to my own conclusion that I will be voting to leave in the referendum next month, but it’s not up to me to decide.’
