Find out more about coastal defences work at public session

PORTSMOUTH residents are invited to find out more about the next phase of the city's coastal defence work at a drop-in session today.

The event takes place at Moorings Way School from 12.30pm to 7.30pm today and features information on plans for work on the east of Portsea Island, down as far as Milton Common.

Attendees can meet the project team working on the scheme and see what the completed project will look like.

They can get information on measures being taken to ensure any disruption from the construction work is minimised for the local community.

Plans include 750 metres of rock to prevent flooding and further erosion of the coastline. The work is important, the council says, because Milton Common is a former landfill site, meaning it contains substances which could damage the natural habitats in Langstone Harbour, which is an internationally-protected site.

Raised earth bunds will be set back into the common in order to provide increased flood protection.
