Homes England took over the Fareham Magistrates Court site last year after it was closed in September 2016.

The organisation has since been working with partners to bring forward the development and have now submitted an application for the demolition of the existing building and a three-storey apartment block with 45 flats.

Along with consultants Wood and WYG, technical studies and a stakeholder consultation have been undertaken to inform the proposal as well as a public consultation event which took place in September.

A spokesman for Homes England said: '˜We would like to thank you for your input to date via the public consultation event and through other means.

'˜The feedback we have received has been extremely useful and has informed the submitted outline planning application for this important site in Fareham.'

Councillors and residents had previously expressed positive views over the sale and potential development of the brownfield site in the town centre.

Fareham North ward councillor Louise Clubley said: '˜The planning application for this site is for 45 flatted units, this is welcome use of a brownfield site within the town centre.

Fellow ward councillor Pam Bryant added: '˜It is our understanding that the developer is not forced to provide affordable housing, we feel sure that FBC will be prepared to work with Homes England to determine the optimum strategy required to try and achieve this much needed type of accommodation.'

Residents can view and comment on the plans by visiting the Fareham Borough Council planning portal at fareham.gov.uk/casetrackerplanning/ and searching the application reference, P/18/1261/OA.

If the application is approved, Homes England's selected contractor will then undertake the required demolition works at the site.

The site will then be marketed in order to secure a developer who to complete the residential redevelopment of the site.
