THE Queen has appointed Nigel Atkinson as Lord Lieutenant for Hampshire.

The 60-year-old will replace Dame Mary Fagan when she retires from the post on September 11.

Mr Atkinson, who lives near Petersfield, will step up from his role as the current vice-Lord Lieutenant.

He served in former army infantry The Royal Green Jackets, before pursuing a business career.

His roles included being the chief executive of the former Gales Brewery, in Horndean.

Mr Atkinson serves as county vice-president of the Duke of Edinburgh Award and is patron of The Rainbow Centre.
